Questions & Answers

1What is a playschool?
A play school is a place where around 10-20 children spend 1-2 hours each day under the supervision of a couple of teachers. “The supervisor-child ratio should ideally be around 1:10″ says Dr. Sushma Mehrotra, an experienced child psychologist.

She believes that play schools have a lot to offer, and that the play schools should not be aimed at developing academic skills like reading and writing. She also says there should be no set goals or any stress on performance; the focus should be on the sensory-motor development and the social development of the child. She is very much an advocate of play schools since they develop age-appropriate behaviour at the right time.” quoted.
2What are the daily activities at Hummingbird Playschool?
Hummingbird Fun Playschool is open to children ages 33 months to 5. Children will perform activities according to daily schedule. Children learning area is divided into stations, such as, writing station, reading & books stations, blocks and motivational toys station, discovery & science station, large-motor playground, dramatic play station and sensorial station. These are the stations where children get to choose to play according to their daily interest. They are free to transfer themselves to any area at any time. They could make good use of their individual time until we get together in a group for circle time.

Although children are learning academic concepts through play, however, academic work (worksheets, writing) will also be assigned. We understand worried parents on their children’s academic progress; therefore, we are having 30 minutes of worksheet activity daily before play time. This is to make sure children will be well-adjusted when transfer to a kindergarten or elementary level.
3How is playschool benefitted to my child?
We provide children with endless opportunities to explore and investigate the world in which they live. Activities on socialization, motor skills, language, cognitive, and sensory experiences are planned for the children. Through our playschool, children’s interests are paired with educational experiences (in all developmental domains) that are relevant, engaging, and meaningful.

Activities may include motivational toys, dramatic play, water play, sand play, cookery, art & crafts… etc. Thus, through all kinds of ‘right’ toys and activities, children play becomes a learning experience.
4What is the difference of Hummingbird Learning House compare to other local kindergarten?
We are different because we promised to be child-centered learning instead of teacher-centered teaching. Based on our teaching experiences, local kindergartens focus more on your child’s academic work whereas we care for your child whole development. Children at Hummingbird Learning House are allowed to grow at own pace and discover their talents. Children are given personal attention during play time, and work on group during project time.

We strive to include non-formal mode of instruction by encouraging children to teach among them. One of the best thing with child-centered learning is children are allowed to voice up their opinion, questions and suggestions at all time and teachers are there to guide them through. At Hummingbird Playschool, it is the unstructured and social way of learning through experience that makes the best impact.
5My child will not be introduced to academic work as much as in local kindergarten, how do I know s/he is learning from playschool?
We believe that play is essential, and children could learn through playing. To most parents, academic work, grading and ranking are believe to set as a ‘prove’ to understand how much a child learns, however, academic work might become a burden to them and stop your child from learning. How much do we understand that learning comes from all sorts of fun ways?

Your child might not learn to write, but they are learning the concepts on writing. Your child might not know how to read, but they are learning the concept of sounds and articulation. Your child might not know how to do addition, but your child understands the skills to solve problem. Through all these unseen learning, children build up interest and understand better.

We believe what an old proverb tells, “I hear, and I forget, I see, and I remember, I do, and I understand”. All learning comes in a step at a time. With the real hands-on activities it provides a strong foundation for your child early learning experiences without stress and pressure. We believe starting your child in our playschool will help your child to gain basic skills in learning and to understand that learning is always fun!
6What is the difference playing at home and at school?
At school children will communicate, play, learn and socialize with friends. Teachers are there to guide them through difficulty and cheer them with fun activity. It is the same as why children should be attending kindergarten or school.

The teacher has a role in extending play by observing the children, interacting with them, giving further information, adding or changing materials as appropriate and, in some instances, providing a sense of direction.

We learn that through touching, manipulating, exploring and testing, children find out about the world around them. Through interacting with other children and adults, they find out about themselves and their relationship to others. Through play, they learn how to solve problems and work cooperatively with others. This is why we encourage your child to explore the world with us at Hummingbird Fun Playschool.
